The "New Seniors" Movement is on the Move

New Seniors, the 65+ crowd, need a way to connect and a reason to find common ground so they can continue to be a vital, active part of society and contribute to their families, friends and communities. Those born between 1930 and 1945, also known as Pre-boomers, are 30 million strong and refuse to fade into the shadows.

Being part of this age group has its frustrations since no one, for the most part, is speaking to and for the New Seniors. In fact, this demographic is pretty much the forgotten generation. Yet we may be the last group of Americans taught by the Greatest Generation. This means we have the responsibility to give back what we have received to those coming behind us. The values, traditions and a long standing belief in the inherent goodness of America, coupled with the knowledge gained through experience, puts New Seniors in the position of being the moral compass for a nation that seems to have lost its direction.

We did not ask to be placed in this position of quiet leadership, it just happened. But we’ll gladly accept the challenges it brings. The first thing we must do is connect with one another in a civil manner and build a sense of community among those 65+. We must find venues where we can express our views, debate issues and hopefully join together to make a difference in our lives and the lives of others we meet along the way. This is important to a growing number of people, and the Internet is helping to allow this to happen.

Next, we must welcome the Baby Boomers as they become New Seniors. Starting next year, they will be turning 65 at the rate of one every 10 seconds. And this will continue through 2030, until all 76 million of them complete the journey. Boomers don’t really know what being 65 is all about, since they have not been here before. But New Seniors know and can help them understand what lies ahead as they move to this new phase of life. And we can help them make the transition while empowering them to give back, too.

Godparenting Like Royalty

Your first invitation to be a godparent must have been exciting. To start with, you had quite a number of stores visited to choose the most meaningful christening gifts. Then you get your second, the third and more calls from friends or family members who desire that you take on the role as godparents for their soon-to-be-baptized baby or child. When you get to more than two godchildren, it might seem overwhelming, never mind that apart from the traditional christening gifts, there are birthdays and holidays where your godchild would expect presents from you.

Before you set yourself to refusing more invitations, you might as well take the position of the Queen herself. Queen Elizabeth II has over thirty godchildren, ranging from the over-sixty-year-old Yugoslavian prince, Alexander to the youngest godchild Princess Theodora of Greece who is in her mid-twenties. This means decades of taking the role of providing spiritual guidance and teachings, and other attending to Her Highness’ other responsibilities as a godparent. Also in the Queen’s list of godchildren is Charles Spencer, the late Princess Diana’s brother, who is the ninth Earl Spencer of Wales.

Though in her age it’s quite sensible to have amassed over thirty godchildren, her son Prince Charles nearly equals that number. The Prince’s godchildren are mostly of blue blood from neighboring countries as well. Not to be left out, Prince William has started assuming responsibilities of a godparent way back in 1999 when Greek prince Konstantine Alexios was baptized. We can expect Prince William’s godchildren to reach thirty in the next decade as well, considering is the crown prince of England.

Understandably, the Royal Family members would get invitations from different royalties all over the world for the special occasion. But while they have ladies-in-waiting and staff to take care of the most appropriate christening gifts and valuable presents intended for the ceremony, the meaningful relations forged is what matters more to the godparents and their godchild. It is about solidifying faith in each others’ alliance responsibilities, particularly for godchildren from another country.

This is not new at all since the links built in the traditional baptism, even marriages, becomes bases for later treaties and agreements between governments and countries. Sadly, such close relations could also turn sour or fall victim to rifts, just like what happened between the Earl of Spencer and the Queen’s family. As it happened, the Westminster Abbey church where Charles Spencer was baptized and where Queen Elizabeth was a godparent, was also the venue where both faced each other during the funeral of Princess Diana. Between the two separate events came a tumultuous relationship for both families.

Chinese Antique Architectural Fragments

China is a very large country with one of the most ancient civilizations on the face of the earth. It has had a history of building that is thousands of years old. Over the past 30 years, China has changed dramatically, and major cities have been completely renovated with new buildings being created where prior buildings had stood often for hundreds of years. In other words, China has become preoccupied with taking its rightful seat among the great powers of the world, and has done what it believed necessary to design and build an infrastructure to support that position.

The political system in China has facilitated the great make-over of the cities. Once the state makes up its mind, there really are no second thoughts or differing opinions. The practical application of this might be expressed as “down with the old and up with the new.” Efforts to protect and maintain old architecture have not succeeded except in relatively few cases.

Therefore a building that might be 3-400 years old can be destroyed overnight. Usually there is some advance warning. Occupants have to be resettled, and plans made. So, certain opportunities present themselves. People get wind of an impending demolition and manage to strip many houses of “built-in” decorative items. Windows, doors, and carved ornamentation are removed and resold into the antiques market. Many of these items need repair as they may not have always been maintained in a scrupulous manner. Others are just fine.

Many of these architectural fragments are simply beautiful as independent sculpture. Windows and doors are frequently beautifully carved – often in highly symbolic images- and clearly worth whatever restoration is required. Others are so far destroyed that only fragments can be salvaged. Now these elements take on a new life of their own. Removed from their original setting, they offer glimpses of the magnificent skill set that carpenters have used throughout the ages.

These fragments are used in multiple ways. People will often use a window as they would a fine painting. Carefully hung on a wall, it becomes high art in and of itself. Doors can function in the same way. Doors, however, are sometimes made into movable screens. Hinged together, the doors make a very substantial – yet portable- room divider. Rescued carvings often are of personages or other highly symbolic objects that convey a sense of “blessing” when hung on a wall. In a certain sense, therefore, China’s old houses do not die completely, but are given rebirth in differing forms, enabling us to appreciate the skills of their creators, and providing another of those wonderful physical connections the living have with the dead.
